New European manufacturing base delivers biodegradable and 100% recyclable stretch wrap at the same cost as conventional alternatives, supporting sustainability ambitions without increasing operating costs

New York, USA, 14th October 2025: BioNatur Plastics (BioNatur) has opened a new European manufacturing partnership producing biodegradable stretch wrap at the same price as traditional non-biodegradable films.

The investment enables European shippers and cargo operators to reduce their environmental footprint without affecting financial performance.

“Sustainable operations should not mean higher costs, and that was the driving force behind our decision to establish European production,” said Chris Paladino, President and Chief Executive Officer, BioNatur Plastics.

“By offering biodegradable and 100% recyclable stretch wrap at a competitive price, operators can make the straightforward decision to switch suppliers, confident they are improving their sustainability, limiting costs, and complying with European Union initiatives such as Scope 2 and 3 emissions reporting.”

Conventional stretch wrap can persist in landfill for up to 1,000 years. In contrast, BioNatur biodegradable stretch wrap fully biodegrades under standard landfill conditions within eight to twelve years.

The product is manufactured with a 1% load of a proprietary, food-safe organic polymer that enables anaerobic bacteria to digest the plastic without leaving harmful microplastics.

Paladino noted that while the European Union (EU) has tightened legislation on plastics in landfill, other regions are lagging behind.

“European manufacturers exporting to the U.S. and Asia can be assured that, at no additional cost, the stretch wrap element of their logistics chain, which will inevitably end up in landfill, will not remain there for centuries.”

Outside landfill, BioNatur Plastics retains an indefinite shelf life and performs exactly like traditional stretch film, ensuring no compromise on handling or protection.

Paladino will be available to discuss BioNatur’s innovation at Air Cargo Americas, Miami, from 11th to 13th November.

Biodegradable: Materials that are digested by microorganisms into water, gas, minerals, and biomass. BioNatur Plastics attract anaerobic bacteria that digest polymers into smaller molecules until fully biodegraded in 8–12 years, unlike competing claims equating biodegradability with microplastics.

Compostable: Materials that also break down naturally, but must enrich soil and complete the process within 12 weeks under industrial composting conditions. They rarely degrade in home compost or landfill and often leave microplastic fragments. Verified by ASTM D6400.

Oxo-degradable: Plastics that fragment under heat, sunlight, and moisture, resulting in persistent microplastics. Testing rarely supports claims of full biodegradation. The European Union has banned oxo-degradables for this reason.

Stretch Wrap (Pallet Wrap / Plastic Film): The most common International Air Transport Association (IATA) term, referring to plastic stretch film used to stabilise and protect palletised or ULD cargo.
